Join Band and Choir at RAJ
Joining band or choir at R.A. Jones is SIMPLE! Here's how to do it:
Students should have received information about band and choir in the spring when the directors visited the elementary schools. Along with the information sent home, there is very simple form to fill out for joining either ensemble. After that form is filled out, have your child turn it in to the office or scan and email it to Miss Castle. Students will then be scheduled for the appropriate class. Band students will be scheduled based on their fittings. If your child did not attend a fitting, please contact Miss Castle ASAP, plan on attending one of the Jump Start dinners (August 2 and 4 at 6:30pm), and/or stop in to see her on schedule pick up night (August 16). The registration forms can be found below.

Band Supplies
Here is a basic overview of the supplies that you will need for band class. 6th grade parents should plan to attend the rental meeting in the fall where you will be able to secure a rental and purchase any additional items that you may need through our approved vendors. This will be held during the second full week of school. Date TBA.
Students will be expected to bring the following materials to class EVERY DAY:
Required Method Books
These will be available to purchase through school from Wert Music the first few weeks of school. You may also stop by the store and pick up your own copy.
Instrument Care Kits
Students need to have all materials necessary to keep their instrument in good playing condition. These items may be purchased separately or sometimes in a kit. We will go over proper care and maintenance procedures for each instrument during class. Specific requirements for each instrument are as follows.
*Students using a school owned instruments should purchase a mouthpiece of their own. Recommended mouthpieces are listed in parenthesis above.
Students will be expected to bring the following materials to class EVERY DAY:
- Your instrument
- Your music folder AND method book
- A pencil
- A good attitude
Required Method Books

- 6th Grade Band – Ed Sueta Band Method, Book 1 (brown)
- 7th Grade Band – Ed Sueta Band Method, Book 2 (green)
- 8th Grade Band – Tradition of Excellence, Book 2 (blue)
Instrument Care Kits
Students need to have all materials necessary to keep their instrument in good playing condition. These items may be purchased separately or sometimes in a kit. We will go over proper care and maintenance procedures for each instrument during class. Specific requirements for each instrument are as follows.
- All personal instrument cases must have a nametag! Parents may want to have the make, model and serial number of your child’s instrument written down at home
- FLUTE: cleaning rod, cloth handkerchief
- OBOE: 2 med-hard reeds (Jones or hand made if possible), swab, cork grease
- CLARINET: at least 3 no. 3 strength reeds (Mitchell Lurie for 6th, Vandoren for 7th/8th) in good condition (not chipped, cracked or warped) at all times, cotton or silk swab, cork grease, (mouthpiece: Fobes Debut or Hite Premiere)
- SAXOPHONE: at least 3 medium strength/no. 3 reeds (Rico for 6th, Vandoren for 7th/8th) in good condition (not chipped, cracked or warped) at all times (mouthpiece: Yamaha 4C or Hite Premiere)
- TRUMPET, BARITONE, TUBA: Blue Juice valve oil, mouthpiece cleaning brush, (mouthpieces: Blessing 7C for trumpet, Blessing 12C for Baritone, Blessing 24Aw for tuba)
- FRENCH HORN: Rotor oil, mouthpiece cleaning brush, (mouthpiece: Blessing 10 or Holton)
- TROMBONE: Slide O Mix Lubricant (ask for this by brand), small spray bottle filled with water (can get at dollar store), cleaning “snake”, mouthpiece brush, (mouthpiece: Blessing 12C)
- PERCUSSION: Mallet pack including yarn mallets, snare drum sticks, and practice pad, you may rent a bell kit for at home practice but this is not required
- ADDITIONAL (OPTIONAL ITEMS): Wire music stand for home, Metronome, Tuner
